CHILLI CHALLENGE

The festival gets off to a scorching start with the Chilli Challenge at the Rendezvous Casino. Throughout the evening you can test your heat tolerance on the Heat Challenge Table with 10 items to try ranging from cool to the world’s hottest chilli: the Naga Death. For real chilli heads we’ve also get even hotter products to blow you away including Satan’s Sweat sauce and chilli wine! Every half hour from 7.30pm - 9pm you can also participate in the Chilli Shop Roulette competition with Fire in the Hole extra hot chilli beer shots and chilli chocolate. The last man standing gets a Brighton Marina Chilli Shop gift voucher. With a special chilli menu in the Upper Deck menu and chilli tasting flights on the tables, this is going to be the hottest night out of the year!

On Saturday 31 March, the Indulgence Cupcake Company team will be hosting the Brighton Bake Off: The Professionals competition which will see three top Brighton restaurants battling for cake supremacy. Whilst on Sunday we invite you to get hands-on with our mini cupcake decorating workshops. Yum!

Step aboard the Vintage Route Master for a culinary tour of Sussex, visiting some our best food and drink producers and seeing ‘behind the scenes’, all in the excellent company of fellow Sussex Foodies. Firstly, we shall be offering a welcome of local apple juice and pastry, to start the day as we mean to go on!
During the course of the day we shall be stopping off at a chocolatier, an artisan cheese maker and a brewer! In addition to these outstanding producers, we shall also be visiting a couple of local farms to see how our local rape seed oil and award winning apple juice is being produced. Tastings as we go ensure a wonderful day out and there will also be plenty of opportunity to buy products if you wish, along the way. On the way to the local produce lunch, we shall be joined by Court Garden Vineyard for a chat about their excellent sparkling wine and a pre-lunch glass of bubbles before stopping at The Crabtree, a recently refurbished gastro pub for a delicious lunch and a chance to chat to your fellow foodie passengers.

Drakes hosts the festival’s first ever International Chef Exchange and welcomes Chef Audrey Eussen of the Beaumont restaurant and hotel in Maasticht. For one night, Audrey will take the reins from Andrew MacKenzie in the Drakes kitchen and produce a five course menu using a combination of local produce she has sourced from Sussex producers, combined with some Dutch ingredients, and of course, her own unique flair.
During her week with us, Audrey will be visiting some local producers including Harveys Brewery and Ridgeview Winery to discover some of Sussex’s famed food and drink. You can also see Audrey and Andrew cook together on the Live Food Show stage on Friday 6 April.

Hotel du Vin hosts a festival wine dinner featuring a selection of fine French wines from the award-winning Chateau Cabezac Wine Collection.
Chateau Cabezac is a 65 hectare estate in the AOC Minervois, Languedoc Roussillon, in the South of France. The owner Gontran Dondain, a passionate wine enthusiast, purchased the estate in 1997 and within ten years restored the vineyard to its proper place in the hierarchy of wine. It has since become one of the top wine estates of the region.
Chateau Cabezac use the finest terroir, along with sustainable farming methods, and progressive wine making techniques, to produce handcrafted, high quality, premium wines, created with considerable passion and dedication by a team of highly skilled professionals. This April, we’ve moved our Live Food Show into the Corn Exchange... but don’t worry, it’s still completely FREE to come and watch Brighton’s leading chefs work their food magic live on stage!
Hosted by local food writer Andrew Kay, we start both days at 10.15am with children’s food demos including Nick Coffer of My Daddy Cooks fame and Cookery Doodle Doo’s Katie Elfer, then from 11am Andrew will be welcoming the likes of Alun Sperring from the Chilli Pickle, Jean Chrisophe from L’Eglise and Rob Carr from Hotel du Vin onto the stage to prepare their signature dishes.
The festival’s International Chef Exchange duo – Audrey Eussen of the Beaumont in Maastricht and Andrew McKenzie of Drakes – will also be cooking with us and sharing their experience of the exchange project.
Our special guest at 2.30pm on Friday 6 April is Great British Bake Off finalist Miranda Gore Browne, who’ll be demonstrating recipes from her new book, Biscuit, which will also be available to buy from the Waterstones team on the day.
Our Live Food Show sponsor is Discover the Origin, so as an extra challenge on the day, we’ll be asking all our chefs to rustle up a five minute dish using either Parma Ham or Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese as a key ingredient.
We’ll also be announcing the winners of the Great Brighton Pizza Competition on Friday 6 April, and the winner of the Bloody Mary Mix Off Competition on Saturday 7 April, both at 5pm.

BRIGHTON FISH FESTIVAL

Join us on Easter Monday for Brighton’s first ever fish festival: a FREE celebration of everything from the sea from Dover Sole to sea kale via lobster and shellfish.
Watch demos in our Live Food Kitchen, ranging from fish preparation to delicious seafood dishes rustled up by chefs from Moshi Moshi, L’Eglise, AguaDulce and Fishy Fishy. Terre á Terre will be showcasing the amazing sea greens that can be found on our shores, and there’ll be the opportunity to taste some vegan ‘prawns’ from Redwood. You can also take part in drop-in sushi making workshops running throughout the day.
The Marine Stewardship Council will be on hand to explain about sustainable fishing practices and the management of the marine environment, whilst our friends from SEALIFE will be creating a local marine eco-system pool so you can see some of the sea creatures to be found in the waters off the Sussex coast.
For some traditional Brighton seaside fun, we’ve got some sideshows from Brighton Pier where you can try your skill and raise money for local charities, and there’ll be regular themed entertainment including Punch & Judy and live music.
For the brave, we’ve also got the opportunity for you to feature in your very own ‘Fish Love’ photo (like Rankin’s image of Greta Scacchi shown here)!
